What is Magnet Fishing?
Magnet Fishing is an activity that has been picked up by adventurers and hobbyist that use strong magnets to search and retrieve ferromagnetic metal objects from water bodies. Magnets of different sizes and strengths are used in all sorts of environment be it lakes, rivers, swamps, ponds, creeks, dams, canals, or sewers (subject to local laws and regulations). Magnet fishing is a low-cost and exciting hobby, which anyone can indulge in. It allows the outdoor enthusiast to interact with nature in a very unique manner. Similarly to fishing, which requires a hook, line and sinker, magnet fishing requires a magnet and a rope. Booby Mags employs a compact, lightweight design that makes use of high quality material available commercially.
What Magnets to Use?
Due to the long time objects have been sitting at the bottom of water bodies, debris may accumulate at the surface of these objects. Therefore, it is recommended to use the strongest magnets available. Booby Mags uses neodymium magnets, which are the strongest permanent magnets commercially available. Neodymium Magnets are rare-earth magnets, made of an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron to form the Nd2Fe14B tetragonal crystalline structure. With a pull strength of almost 70 lbs, these magnets can pull out objects that’s nearly 50 times their own weight.
What Rope to Use?
In addition to a strong magnet, magnet fishing requires strong, durable and lightweight ropes to use as a line. Booby Mags utilize nylon paracord that is 4mm, type 3 and has 7 braided core yarns. With a minimum strength of 500 lbs, these ropes are a perfect match for the magnet and will easily be able to handle any load latched on by the magnet. The light weight and elasticity of the rope gives it slack, and causes it to be sensitive to pulling feedback from the magnet. Long lengths of rope 50 – 100 ft are recommended for magnet fishing.
